I was watching Old Guard 2 and in the second-to-last set piece, when Andy and her colleagues enter the nuclear facility, they realize that no one can use guns for fear of damaging the nuclear core and that they will have to resort to hand-to-hand combat. One of them mentions, “but there’s always that one guy…” implying that there will always be that one idiot who will still pull the trigger.

It got me thinking about that one person, who always goes against the grain in a way that is at best irritating, at worst, dangerous. Here is a list.

There’s always that one person…

…Who keeps honking even when the light is red and there are five cars in front of him, hoping, I guess, that either the signal will change because of his honking or everyone else will break the signal so that he can pass through.

…Who, when everyone is waiting patiently in line to board the aircraft, will rush in front thinking, I guess, that the flight is going to leave without them.

…Who will forward two or three messages every day in WhatsApp groups, assuming it is their responsibility to educate all the ignoramuses in the group.

…Who will not read the room in a WhatsApp group if there is a conversation going on and post some irrelevant joke or video and break the flow simply because they are posting to ten other groups at the same time. This includes acts like posting a joke when everyone else is expressing condolences about someone’s loss or forwarding a video of a flood in another city, when everyone is wishing someone,  happy birthday.

…Who, when you bring up a specific topic, always knows everything about that topic…and knows everyone in this world.

…Who, when you ask a specific question to a specific person, will insist on answering that question on that person's behalf.

…Who insists on being part of any conversation, whether it involves them or not.

…Who finds a conspiracy theory behind everything, including why it rained at 7 in the morning and not at 6.

…Who, when you're congratulating someone for an achievement or success, will start talking about their own achievements and undermine the importance of that moment.

…Who, when asked to say sorry, will do so, but then add a “but” after the sorry, which pretty much negates the apology because the only thing that matters is what comes after the “but…”

…Whose only answer to everything is "it is what it is."

…Who always claims to know someone on the inside who promises to get you tickets or a job or a quick appointment, and when it doesn’t work out, invokes God or a conspiracy theory or says, “but I tried my best” and leaves you high and dry.

…Who is Jain or vegan or follows a specific diet and insists on going only to those places that can accommodate them, rather than figuring out solutions for themselves, no matter which restaurant the group goes to.

…Who insists on taking a 4 am domestic flight instead of the 10 am during a vacation just to maximize the so-called fun-time at the destination even if they end up being bleary-eyed and tired and the journey is all messed up.

…Who, the moment you tell them about your travel itinerary, will criticize it as being too long or too short or say that you’re missing out on must-see places and spoil your trip even before you’ve begun.

…Who confidently claims to know people who are not doctors, who can reverse diabetes, or cure backache with a kick or make you healthy with urine therapy/aromatherapy/reiki.

…Who will insist on picking up the phone, even if not urgent, in the middle of a conversation, thus derailing it.

…Who will insist on putting the phone on speaker and talking loudly in a closed room, like an airport lounge, disrupting everyone’s peace and quiet.

These people exist and are all around us and all we can do is tolerate them and not lose our own temper at their obliviot behavior and hope to stop them, if that behavior is dangerous to themselves or to us.
